THE COMMUNITY
MORAY is an attractive area with many pleasing characteristics, and the rich farming land of the Laich of Moray. To the South lies part of the Cairngorms National Park.
Situated midway between Inverness and Aberdeen, Elgin is the administrative and commercial capital of Moray, and one of the oldest and smallest cities in Scotland.
Elgin boasts a modern shopping centre, and several large well-known stores are situated in retail parks, a library complex, leisure facilities, a modern hospital (Dr Gray’s), a railway and bus station giving links between Inverness and Aberdeen and beyond.
There are two secondary schools - Elgin Academy and Elgin High School (New Elgin) - as well as a number of primaries, nurseries and playgroups. A youth café is firmly established in the town.
Situated a few miles South-west of Elgin, Birnie and Pluscarden is a rural parish set in a landscape of real beauty. From the pine covered hillsides of the Pluscarden Glen, to the more open farmland of Birnie, the charge encompasses the hamlets of Miltonduff and Thomshill. The area has four community halls and a primary school (Mosstowie). There is a good number of residents in the parish.
Elgin High has a congregation of 600 with an average attendance of 100, while Birnie and Pluscarden have a joint congregation of 300.
